I Think My Bathroom Scale is Broken

Over the course of our our eleven day holiday I missed three days of running. The most common reason for a missed run over the past few years is early morning travel. I am a morning runner and find it very difficult to do a run once the days activities are set in motion.

We traveled to Portland, Oregon, Juneau, Haines and Skagway in Alaska, then Whitehorse, followed by a half day visit to Vancouver.

Missed Day #1 – We had to leave our home at 6 a.m. to catch our flight to Portland. Missed Day #2 In Haines, Alaska, we left our motel at 5:30 a.m. to catch a fast-ferry to Skagway.  Missed Day #3 A 6:00 a.m. departure from our lodgings in Whitehorse to catch our Vancouver flight.

I’ve described our run in Portland and here are photos from the run that followed in Juneau.  Spotted on the run were these four blue heron, the only heron seen on this trip.  On my last trip to Juneau, I was staying at a lodge quite a way out of the city and I saw a bald eagle and twice, a pod of orcas.  No such luck this time.

Those sightings took place in early spring, when bears were not as active and probably hibernating, or so I told myself. I would not have ventured out on the roads in that quieter area of Juneau otherwise.

This  Juneau run was 2.5 miles through the main street of town, through a souvenir store and along the waterfront. I ran through a gauntlet of large ravens which would definitely scare off anyone with ornithophobia.

This first morning in Juneau was much enjoyed as our late evening arrival in Juneau introduced us to the rough edges of the city that appear once the cruise ships depart. There is urban sprawl in Juneau and the downtown has suffered in that it caters almost exclusively to tourists in the day and seems a bit like a deserted and rundown, Disneyland set in the later evening. In the early morning, locals heading off to work abound and chit chat in the local coffee shop was congenial and lively.

I was motivated to do a short run in anticipation of brunch at my brother’s favourite Juneau breakfast place, The Sandpiper.

My breakfast of corn beef hash and poached eggs was tasty although was quite far off the scrumptious version dished out by Kenny and Zuke’s in Portland which at $11.45 was $2.50 cheaper than the Sandpiper’s version. Alaska can be fairly pricey.  Portland’s version of corn beef hash is to Alaska’s, as king crab is to non-king-crab. Read the review, “Can the Jewish Deli be Reformed?” from the NY Times.

Scrumptious and leisurely breakfasts are one of the best parts of vacationing. On our last day in Portland I ordered corn beef hash and cheese blintzes.  Yes, I confess that with minimal worries about weight gain, I am a bit of a piglet.  Although, I’m still tending towards the broken-scale theory as I can’t figure out how I gained five pounds on our fairly active vacation.

  2. I also am a morning runner. I just can’t get motivated to go at night. But I enjoy getting out there early and hearing the morning sounds before too many people are out and about. However, I usually don’t go running during vaction. Good for you!

    • I always run while on vacation but don’t “train” hard. It is not fair to one’s family and/or traveling companions. Like you part of the a.m. appeal is the reduced pedestrian traffic and quiet.

    • I run less while on vacation, just because there is so much to do. Also, because of all the walking. I find it much easier to run at 5 a.m. than 5 p.m.

    • Thank you for those words. I think of my blog as being semi-private so it was a bit of a shock to get so many hits. Thankfully, heart disease does not run in my family.

  8. Forget the hash, I want the blintzes. I have that problem with my scale as well. My clothes fit better but the number remains the same.

  9. Your bathroom scale is NOT Broken. You retain water when traveling, especially flying. The weight gain will come right off. Congrats on being FP!

    • Thanks for your comment. The weight has come off now that I am back to my regular exercise routine and limiting my intake of refined sugar. Although, I have made a blueberry pie and a lemon pie since returning home.

  10. Great photos! Though not a runner, I too need to workout in the morning, if I’m to exercise at all. Once the day gets going, it’s too late for me. Thanks for sharing your travel with us and congrats on freshly pressed!

    • My brother insisted I visit and said he would give me my money back if I didn’t like it. He also alerted me to a Hotwire special at THE NINES, which is another story in itself. Loved the place.

  18. throw it away. ditch the scale. it’s been a single source of misery for me for years, and when i got rid of it, my life got significantly less stressful.

    • When I was young, I got teased often for being very skinny. I used to cringe when the expression “so thin, she dissappears sideways” was used. That was me. Which is why gaining weight is a surprising thing. Of course, running just about every day of my life for the past 30 years helps too but I know running is not for everyone and I do feel luck that I was born to run.

  23. Juneau photo look breath taking and so does the food entree. I am sure the scale have broken or you might be retaining water. Nevertheless know that you had a great vacation and enjoyed it. The pounds if it is accurate will come off in no time.

    • It helps that my husband is a runner too. Otherwise, I think it might be a bit tricky to fit in as I would not want to hold up the day for others. Although, I often travel with a flashlight so I can rouse myself early, and get out the door before others wake up. Sadly, my husband has really had to cut back on his running because of a torn meniscus. We are no longer able to share long, adventurous tourist runs.

  27. Super jealous about your awesome meal plan, and also super nostalgic from your pictures! I grew up in Juneau and now live in the Midwest, but I can still tell exactly where on the wharf you were when you snapped those shots. =) We used to hang out there and watch the big luxury cruise ships come in and out. Also love that you got the ravens – those used to hang out on the roof of our house when I was younger, and the sound of the walking around up there is pretty intimidating. Sounds like a great trip!

    • Thank you for your comments and memories. In the quiet of one evening we came upon a young couple on the boardwalk who were practicing an elaborate dance routine. It was a very sweet sight.

  29. Sometimes vacation gives you a reason to take a little break from running….and in turn makes for better running after the vacation fun. I tried to keep up my running during a cruise to the Bahamas, only to find out that it’s not about the quantity of running, it’s about the quality of running! Running around in a circle is NOT fun. Maybe I should have planned better? Who knows! lol.

  34. We have been considering a cruise, trying to choose a place to go but I am afraid that I will gain a massive amount of weight even if I use the treadmill on the ship. Any tips besides not eating?

    • You can take a ferry from Seattle or Vancouver and travel Alaska at your own pace. I think it is quite a bit cheaper. Some folks we met who were on a cruise were surprised to find out that it only cost us $37 each to travel on the ferry from Juneau to Haines. You don’t get as much chance to sample local cuisine and it seems that people have to be back to the ship for around 9 p.m. I think it must be a bit stressful to be worrying about missing your boat every day. Especially when you are enjoying such beautiful sights and trying to relax.

      My main tip is to exercise every day when you can, then when you gain weight on vacation you know that once you get back to your usual routine, you will get back to your usual weight. I run most every day and lately, for the last three years my average mileage per week is about 45 miles. Which, is actually a lot less than what I used to run.

      Check out the schedules of the Alaska Marine Highway. If you are planning to take your car, you really have to book far in advance.

    • The berry sauce was very fresh and fruity. The crepes were light and fluffy. The sour cream was top quality as was the cheese inside. Magnifico! The best cheese blintzes ever.

    • I don’t find it difficult as I think you get to see more than you would otherwise. I do find it hard to run as much as I normally do is generally about an hour a day, with a two hour plus run on the weekend. It helps that my husband, is a runner, although an semi-injured runner at the moment.
